Buyer's notes

About the Beechcraft Bonanza 33

What it is

The Model 33 Debonair is the straight-tail Bonanza. Beech introduced it in 1960 as a cheaper, plainer answer to the Piper Comanche, with a conventional tail on the V-tail's fuselage and wing, a 225 hp Continental IO-470 and a bare-bones interior. Buyers kept adding the options back, so by 1968 Beech gave up and renamed it the Bonanza 33. The F33A, with the 285 hp IO-520 and the longer cabin shared with the V35B, is the version most people mean when they say "33." It stayed in production until 1994.

It flies like a Bonanza: heavy but well-harmonized controls and a solid ride in turbulence. The straight tail gives up a knot or two to the V-tail in exchange for none of the tail-wag in chop and none of the structural history.

Variants that matter for price

The Debonair years run 33, A33, B33 and C33 with the 225 hp IO-470, and C33A with the 285 hp IO-520 from 1966. E33 and F33 kept the 225 hp engine into the early 1970s; E33A, F33A and the rare G33 (260 hp) carried the bigger Continentals. From 1970 the F33A got the longer fuselage and the aft baggage space, and later F33As can be found with the optional rear seats that make it a tight five or six.

Buyers hunt the F33A first, and within the F33A the later the better: 1980s and 1990s airplanes with factory dual yokes, the larger fuel option, a modern panel and a low-time IO-520 command the top. A 225 hp Debonair with a throw-over yoke and original avionics is the way in. Sellers type F33A, E33A, C33A, F33 and "Debonair."

What buyers check

The landing gear comes first. It is electric with a motor, a gearbox and a set of push-pull rods that need a Beech-savvy shop to rig. The elevators and rudder have magnesium skins, which corrode from the inside and are expensive to replace, so look closely at the tail. Fuel bladders leak when they get old; stains at the wing root tell you before the logs do. Look at the wing bolts and the forward spar carry-through for corrosion.

On the engine, the IO-470 is a gentle 225 hp and the IO-520 has a history of crankcase cracks on some serial ranges. Many F33As have been converted to the IO-550 under STC, which adds useful load and speed and is a real plus if it was done properly. Tip tanks, a speed-sloped windshield, dual yokes, a modern autopilot and an engine monitor all add value; a throw-over yoke and a vacuum-only panel subtract.

Who it suits

The 33 suits a pilot who wants Bonanza speed and feel without the V-tail's baggage, carrying two or three people and bags on trips of several hundred miles. It is not a six-seat airplane in any practical sense, and it is not cheap to keep. The cross-shop is the V-tail 35 for less money and more argument, the A36 for real seats in the back, and a Mooney M20 or Comanche 260 if speed per dollar is the whole point.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
