About the Kitfox Kitfox
What it is
The Kitfox is the folding-wing, two-seat, tube-and-fabric kit airplane from Idaho that has been in production under one company name or another since 1984, and there are thousands of them flying. It began as a light, Rotax two-stroke-powered fun machine that fit in a trailer, and it grew over seven generations into a Rotax 912-class bush airplane with a wide cabin and a real useful load. Full-span flaperons, folding wings and a choice of tailwheel or tricycle gear run through the whole line.
It flies light and easy. Control forces are low, the flaperons give a quick roll, and the slow landing speed makes short grass routine. The early models are twitchy and the later ones are much more settled, and that difference is most of what you pay for. Owners keep them a long time because they do the fun part of flying cheaply.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers list Model 1 through Model 4, then Series 5, 6 and 7, plus the sub-names: Speedster (shorter wing, faster), Vixen and Safari for the Series 5, Super Sport and STi for the Series 7. The Model 1 through 3 are narrow-cabin airplanes with Rotax 582 two-strokes and sell as what they are. The Model 4, especially the 4-1200 with a 912, is the first one most buyers consider. The Series 5 brought the wide cabin, and the Series 7 is the modern airplane, with a higher gross weight, a 912 ULS, 912iS or 915iS, and the STi version set up with big tires and bush gear. Factory-built S-LSA Series 7s exist alongside the kits. Panel, engine choice and gear configuration move the ask more than the year does.
What buyers check
Fabric age comes first on the older airplanes. Covering from the 1980s and 1990s can be brittle and sun-damaged, and a recover is a big job, so ask when it was done. The lift struts and their end fittings on the early models have a documented service bulletin history, and buyers ask whether they were replaced. Folding-wing pins, flaperon hangers and the bungee or spring gear get checked for wear and play, and the welded steel fuselage for corrosion at the lower longerons and tailpost.
On a two-stroke, the engine is a wear item and buyers price it that way. On the 912 series, the five-year rubber replacement, gearbox inspection and carburetor sync history matter more than hours. Ask who built the airplane and look at the workmanship with someone who knows the type. Big tires, floats, a glass panel, a Grove aluminum gear conversion and a 915 upgrade add value; a homemade modification without paperwork subtracts.
Who it suits
The Kitfox suits a pilot who wants a light, cheap-to-run airplane for two that folds into a corner of the hangar and gets in and out of short grass. It is not a traveling airplane, and the early models are not for someone who wants to carry two large adults. Realistic cross-shops are the Just Highlander, the Rans S-7, the Avid Flyer it descends from, and the Zenith STOL line.

Geography and method
Where are the Kitfoxs, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
