About the Progressive Aerodyne SeaRey
What it is
The SeaRey is a two-seat, side-by-side amphibious flying boat built in Florida since the early 1990s, first as a kit and later as a factory-built light-sport airplane. It is a high-wing pusher with a Rotax above the wing, a fiberglass hull with sponsons, retractable gear, folding wings and a sliding canopy you can fly with open. Several hundred have been built, most of them by their owners. It flies low and slow, puts down on a lake or a river, then taxis up a ramp on its wheels.
Owners describe it as the most fun per hour in aviation. The trade is that it is slow, it carries two people and not much else and it demands gear discipline, because a wheels-down water landing will flip a SeaRey in a heartbeat. Rough water and salt water shorten its life.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers list the engine and the generation. Early kit SeaReys with a two-stroke Rotax 582 sit at the bottom; the 80 hp four-stroke Rotax 912 UL was the next step and the 100 hp 912 ULS became the standard. The turbocharged 914 adds hot-day performance and complexity, and the newest airplanes carry the 915 iS. Airframe generation matters as much: the original Classic, the LSX from the late 2000s with a redesigned hull and larger cabin, and the factory-built Elite and Adventure light-sport versions, which sell for the most because they can be used for instruction. An amateur-built LSX with a 912 ULS and a good build is the sweet spot for most private buyers. Electric gear, a gear position warning system and a ballistic parachute add value.
What buyers check
The hull is inspected for cracks, delamination, repairs and blistering, especially at the step and keel. Anything aluminum that has seen salt water gets a corrosion inspection. The Rotax has a rubber replacement interval and a gearbox inspection, and the logbook should show both. The gear retract system is cycled and inspected, since a wrong gear indication is the most dangerous thing that can happen to a SeaRey. The water rudder, sponson attach points and wing-fold hinges are checked for wear. For a kit-built airplane, ask who built it and look at the build log; a factory-assisted build is worth more. A flip or a sinking in the history is not unusual, but the rebuild needs to be documented. A condition inspection tends to turn up hull chips, corroded hardware, tired Rotax rubber and a gear system that needs adjustment.
Who it suits
The SeaRey suits a pilot who has water nearby and wants to land on it without buying a certified amphibian. It is not a traveling airplane, not a rough-water boat and not a fit for two heavy people with full fuel. Buyers cross-shop the ICON A5 (newer, pricier), the Aventura II and the Super Petrel LS among the light amphibians, and the Lake LA-4 for a certified airplane with four seats.
