About the Rans S-7/S-21
What it is
The S-7 Courier is a tandem two-seat, high-wing taildragger with a welded steel fuselage under fabric. It first flew in the mid 1980s and has been sold ever since, as a kit in most years and for a stretch as a factory-built S-LSA called the S-7LS. Nearly all fly behind a Rotax 912 of 80 or 100 horsepower, with a few older ones on two-stroke 582s. It does what a Cub does with a lighter airframe, a wider cabin and a modern engine, and it has none of the ground-handling temper that puts people off older taildraggers.
The S-21 Outbound is the same company's all-metal backcountry two-seater, introduced in the late 2010s. It is side-by-side, matched-hole and pulled-rivet, built as a taildragger or a tricycle, and it takes engines from the 100 hp Rotax 912 up through the turbocharged 915 and the Titan and UL Power options. It carries more, cruises faster and still gets into a short strip.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers write S-7, S-7C, S-7S or S-7LS. The early S-7 and S-7C were lighter airplanes with a lower gross weight and often a two-stroke engine; the S-7S brought a stronger airframe, a wider cabin and more gross. The S-7LS is the factory-built version, and some buyers pay for that certificate. The engine is the main lever: a 100 hp 912ULS or a fuel-injected 912iS asks more than an 80 hp 912UL, and a 582 example lives in its own bracket. On the S-21, a 915iS or Titan build with a constant-speed prop is a different airplane from a 912ULS on a fixed pitch. Apart from the S-7LS these are amateur-built, so workmanship and a signed-off Phase I matter as much as the model letter.
What buyers check
Fabric first on an S-7: age, punch-test history and how well the covering was done, because a recover is the most expensive job the airplane can need. Look at the steel fuselage for rust at the tailpost and under the floorboards. A Rotax needs its rubber hoses replaced on the calendar and its gearbox inspected on the hour schedule; an engine with both logged is worth paying for. Ask for the builder's log and photos on any kit. On an S-21, rivet quality and whether the builder followed the manual on the fuel system tell you most of what you need. Damage history on these usually means a ground loop, so check the gear legs, lower longerons and wingtips.
Who it suits
The S-7 is for a pilot who wants to fly low and slow into grass and gravel with one passenger behind and a light bag. The S-21 suits the same pilot who wants side-by-side seating and enough load to camp out of the airplane. Neither is a serious IFR platform. Cross-shop the S-7 against a Kitfox, a Piper Cub or a CubCrafters Sport Cub, and the S-21 against a Kitfox Series 7, a Bearhawk LSA or a Zenith CH 750.

Geography and method
Where are the S-7/S-21s, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
