The Sonex market this morning
What does a used Sonex ask right now?
With 20 for sale this morning, the Sonex Sonex is the 13th most-listed piston type on Barnstormers. 8 were listed in the last 30 days and 6 came down, about the same churn as the rest of the class. TX has the most of them (3), then CA (2).
Asking prices run from $6,500 to $40,000, and half of the 18 priced listings sit between $15,000 and $27,750. The median is $25,000, 79% below the experimental and kit median of $119,500. Age matters: 2000s airframes ask a median of $37,500 against $11,750 for the 2010s.
7 sellers cut price in the last 30 days, 35% of the live fleet against 27% across every type we track; the average cut took 15% off the ask. Of the Sonexs we watched appear, 50% were still for sale 14 days later.
Set against every other type, the Sonex also appears in our note on which models get their price cut most often, with the sample behind each figure.

About the Sonex Sonex
What it is
The Sonex is a small, all-aluminum, side-by-side two-seat homebuilt from a Wisconsin kit maker, first flown in the late 1990s and sold as plans or a kit ever since. It uses pulled rivets and bent-sheet construction, and it can be finished as a taildragger or a tricycle. The design goal was speed on very little horsepower. Most fly behind an AeroVee, a Volkswagen-derived engine of about 80 hp, or a Jabiru 3300 of about 120 hp, and later kits accept the Rotax 912 and UL Power engines. Cruise on 80 hp is well above what a Cessna 150 does on more fuel.
The family has grown around the same fuselage. The Waiex is the Sonex with a Y-tail. The Onex is a single-seater with folding wings that fits in a one-car garage. The Xenos is a motorglider version with a long span and a glide ratio you can soar on. Owners describe them as light on the controls, quick in roll and a little twitchy in pitch until you get used to it, with a cockpit that is snug for two large people.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers write Sonex, Sonex-B, Waiex, Waiex-B, Onex or Xenos. The B models, introduced in the mid 2010s, widened the cabin, enlarged the baggage area and the fuel tank, and changed the panel and gear; a B asks more than a legacy airframe in the same condition. Engine choice is the next lever. An AeroVee is cheap to run but the least powerful and the most builder-dependent. A Jabiru 3300 gives the airplane real climb, and a Rotax 912 in a B model is the combination newer buyers want. A build finished to light-sport limits is worth noting, since it opens the airplane to sport pilots.
What buyers check
The engine is where most of the risk sits. On an AeroVee, ask who assembled it, how the cooling baffles were done, and what the cylinder head temperatures look like on a climb; badly cooled VW conversions run hot and eat valves. On a Jabiru, check the through-bolt and valve-train history and whether the factory bulletins were done. On the airframe, look for cracked or smoking pulled rivets around the gear attach, at the spar and along the tail. Sonex gear legs are sprung aluminum and they scar on hard landings, so inspect the legs and the attach points. Ask for the builder's log and photos, a completed Phase I, and a weight-and-balance that matches the airplane.
Who it suits
The Sonex fits a pilot who wants a fast, cheap, fun airplane for local flying and short trips, with one passenger who packs light. It is not a family or IFR airplane, and a taildragger Sonex in a crosswind is not a beginner's airplane. The Onex is the answer for a solo pilot with no hangar. Buyers cross-shop the Sonex against a Van's RV-12, a Zenith CH 601 or 650, and a Thatcher CX4 on the single-seat side.

Geography and method
Where are the Sonexs, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
