About the Taylorcraft BC-12

What it is

The Taylorcraft BC-12D is a side-by-side two-seat, high-wing taildragger from the late 1940s, with a welded steel-tube fuselage, wooden wing spars and fabric over everything. Its designer had earlier drawn the airplane that became the Cub, and this was his faster answer to it. Thousands were built in a short postwar burst before the company went under. Power is a 65 hp Continental A65 in most of them, with a few on the 85 hp C85.

It is a light, slippery airplane for its era. On the same 65 hp a Taylorcraft cruises noticeably faster than a Cub, and it glides better than most pilots expect on their first engine-out practice. Control is by yokes rather than sticks, and the cabin is narrow enough that two broad-shouldered people get to know each other. Owners describe the handling as light and pleasant and the airplane as cheap to own, as long as the wood and the fabric are good.

Variants that matter for price

Sellers write BC-12D most of the time, and then BC-12D-85 or BC-12D-4-85 for the 85 hp versions, the latter with wing tanks. The prewar B-series (BC, BC-65, BL-65 with a Lycoming, BF-65 with a Franklin) are rarer and trade on originality more than utility. The Model 19 Sportsman of the early 1950s is the later, slightly heavier variant, and the F-19 and F-21 from the 1970s revival came with an O-200 and modern details and ask more. Among BC-12Ds, the C85 conversion and a wing-tank fuel setup are the two things buyers pay for, because the stock nose tank is small. A recent recover, an electrical system with a starter and a radio all matter on an airplane that often has none of them.

What buyers check

The wooden spars are the whole conversation. Buyers want to see a recent spar inspection, done by someone who knew what they were looking for, with photos of the spar and the attach fittings. Wet or cracked wood means new spars, which is a major job. The lift struts have their own inspection history for internal corrosion, and many have been replaced with sealed new ones; ask which the airplane has. Look at the lower fuselage tubing and the tailpost for rust, and at the fabric for age and punch-test results. The A65 is simple and well supported; check for oil leaks and ask about magneto and carburetor history. Damage history is nearly always a ground loop or a nose-over; look at the gear, the wingtips and the firewall.

Who it suits

The Taylorcraft fits a pilot who wants the cheapest honest taildragger that will still go somewhere, and who is comfortable with wood, fabric and hand-propping. It is not for two big people, not for instrument flying, and not a load carrier. Buyers cross-shop it against a Piper J-3 or PA-11, an Aeronca Champ or Chief, and a Luscombe 8.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
