About the Luscombe 8

What it is

The Luscombe 8 is a two-seat, side-by-side, all-metal taildragger that first flew in 1937 and stayed in production, with interruptions and changes of ownership, into the late 1950s. Around six thousand were built, most of them between 1946 and 1948. It has a monocoque aluminum fuselage, metal-skinned wings on the later models and 65 to 90 hp Continentals.

It flies like the sports car of its era: fast for the horsepower, light on the controls and busy on the ground. The narrow gear, short coupling and stiff spring-steel legs have earned it a ground-handling reputation that owners defend and everyone else repeats. Handled with attention it lands fine. Handled casually it ground loops. Owners like the honesty of the controls, the ability to keep up with a 150 on far less fuel and an airframe that does not rot.

Variants that matter for price

The 8A is the common one, with the 65 hp Continental A-65 and fabric-covered wings on most examples. The 8C and 8D brought the 75 hp Continental, with the 8D adding wing fuel tanks in place of the fuselage tank behind the panel. The 8E moved to the 85 hp C-85 and metal wings, and the 8F, the last and most sought after, has the 90 hp C-90, metal wings, wing tanks and usually an electrical system. Buyers pay the most for a clean 8E or 8F with electrics, and for an 8A converted to 85 or 90 hp under one of the common STCs. Original 8As with no electrical system and a hand-propped A-65 sit at the bottom.

What buyers check

Corrosion is the main event on an airplane this old. The monocoque fuselage is inspected at the tail cone, under the floor, around the door sills and where the gear legs enter the fuselage. The aluminum spars are checked for corrosion at the root and strut fittings. The fuselage tank on early models sits right behind the panel, and leaks and any repairs to it need attention. The gear legs are checked for cracks and alignment, because a bent leg is a classic sign of a hard ground loop somewhere in the past. Engine conversions to 85 or 90 hp, an electrical system with a starter, Cleveland wheels and brakes and a metal-wing swap all add value. An annual tends to turn up cracked exhaust, stiff cables and small skin cracks around the rear fuselage.

Who it suits

The Luscombe suits a pilot who wants the cheapest honest tailwheel airplane that will actually go somewhere and who does not mind that it demands feet on every landing. It carries two adults and very little else, and the fuselage-tank models have limited range. Buyers cross-shop the Cessna 120 and 140 (roomier, more forgiving, more expensive), the Aeronca Chief, the Taylorcraft BC-12D and, for those who want no tailwheel at all, the Ercoupe.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
