About the Van's RV-10

What it is

The RV-10 is the four-seat airplane in the Van's line, a low-wing, tricycle-gear kit that first flew in 2003 and has since been completed by well over a thousand builders. It is aluminum in the wings, tail and fuselage with a composite cabin top and gull-wing doors, and nearly every one flies behind a Lycoming IO-540 of about 260 horsepower turning a constant-speed prop. The design brief was a real four-place cross-country airplane with RV handling, and it hit it: four adults, bags, useful fuel and a cruise that embarrasses most certified singles.

It flies like a big RV. Roll is light for the size, pitch is well damped, and it lands without drama on a 3,000 foot runway. The cabin is wider than a Bonanza's. The type has a reputation as the best four-seat homebuilt you can buy, with the caveat that you are buying someone else's construction work.

Variants that matter for price

There is only one model, so sellers write RV-10 and the differences come from the build. The engine is nearly always an IO-540, but builders vary between a new factory engine, a rebuilt one and a used core, and the logbook tells which. The panel makes the largest spread: dual large-screen EFIS with a two-axis autopilot, an IFR navigator and ADS-B is what buyers expect, and a VFR-only panel takes a lot off. Paint and the fiberglass finish around the cabin top and doors show the builder's standard at a glance. Later kits came with more pre-finished parts, so a newer serial number usually means a cleaner airframe.

What buyers check

The doors come first. Early airplanes had doors that could open or depart in flight if the latch was not fully engaged, and the fix is a set of factory and aftermarket latch, seal and warning changes; make sure the airplane has them and that the doors close solidly. Look at the composite cabin top for cracks at the door frames and where it joins the aluminum. Check the fuel tanks for weeping at the rivets and the inboard rib, which shows as blue stains. The nose gear is sturdier than on the two-seat RVs but the leg still should be inspected for wear at the socket. Ask for the builder's log, photos, the Phase I sign-off and, if a second or third owner is selling, who has done the condition inspections since. On the IO-540, ask about cylinder history and time spent sitting. Builder-installed items like custom wiring and unusual fuel system routing are what a good prebuy spends its time on.

Who it suits

The RV-10 is for a pilot who wants to move a family or three friends across several states at a good clip and is comfortable owning an experimental. It is not an aerobatic airplane, not a short-field bush plane, and not for an owner who wants a mechanic to handle everything. Buyers cross-shop it against a Cirrus SR22, a Bonanza A36 and a Cessna 182, and inside the homebuilt world against a Sling TSi and a Lancair ES.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
