About the CubCrafters Carbon Cub
What it is
The CubCrafters Carbon Cub is a Super Cub built the way it would have been if the Super Cub had been designed in this century: the same tandem two-seat, tube-and-fabric layout, with carbon fiber and modern engineering taking hundreds of pounds out of the airframe and a purpose-built 180 hp engine up front. The Carbon Cub SS arrived in 2009 as a factory-built light sport airplane, and the kit-built EX and the factory-assisted FX followed. CubCrafters builds them in Yakima, Washington.
It flies like a Cub with an unreasonable amount of power. Takeoff rolls are short enough to be a party trick, climb is steep, and the big flaps and slow stall make rough strips routine. Cruise is slow and the cabin is narrow, which is the Cub tradeoff and always has been. Owners describe it as the airplane that makes backcountry flying easy rather than heroic.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers list Carbon Cub SS, EX, EX-2, EX-3, FX-2 and FX-3. The SS is the factory-built light sport airplane, limited to the light sport gross weight and speed, which caps useful load. The EX is the experimental amateur-built kit with the same airframe and a higher builder-set gross weight, and the FX is the same kit assembled in the factory's builder-assist program, so it carries the E-AB registration with factory build quality. The EX-3 and FX-3 got a fuel-injected, higher-output engine and a further gross-weight increase, and those are what most buyers hunt. Newer airplanes with the factory Garmin panel and a constant-speed prop sit at the top of the range.
What buyers check
On an EX, the first question is who built it and whether the builder still holds the repairman certificate, because a second owner needs an A&P for the yearly condition inspection. An FX settles the workmanship question but not the certificate one. On any Carbon Cub, look at the gear, cabane, tailwheel and prop for evidence of a nose-over, because these airplanes go to places where that happens, and then at how the repair was documented.
The CC340 and CC363i engines are proprietary builds, so the question is who has serviced them and whether the shop knows them. Big tires, floats, skis, a bigger prop and an extended baggage compartment add to the ask; a fresh Garmin G3X panel adds more. An SS that a seller describes as "could be converted" to experimental is still an SS.
Who it suits
The Carbon Cub suits the pilot who wants to land on gravel bars and ridge tops with one passenger and a light load and does not mind flying slowly to get there. It is a poor choice for two big people with bags, for IFR, and for anyone who needs to cover distance. Realistic cross-shops are the Piper Super Cub, the Aviat Husky, and the American Legend Cub, with a Kitfox or Highlander for a similar mission for less money.

Geography and method
Where are the Carbon Cubs, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
