About the Lancair Lancair

What it is

Lancair is a family of fast composite kit airplanes rather than one type, and the name on a listing tells you less than the model number after it. The line started in the mid 1980s with the two-seat Lancair 200 and 235, low-wing retractables molded from fiberglass and foam with a small wing and a smaller cockpit. The 320 and 360 followed with Lycoming power, then the four-seat Lancair IV and pressurized IV-P, the fixed-gear ES (the airframe that became the certified Columbia 300), and in the early 2000s the two-seat Legacy with an IO-550 in most examples.

Every one of them is fast for its horsepower because the wings are small and the airframes are slick. The price for that is high wing loading, an abrupt stall and approach speeds well above what most pilots learned on. The early 235 and 320 in particular have a reputation for sharp low-speed handling, and the type as a whole has an accident history that insurers know by heart. Owners who train for it describe a superb cross-country machine. Owners who don't tend not to stay owners.

Variants that matter for price

Sellers list these as Lancair 235, 320, 360, IV, IV-P, ES and Legacy. The Legacy is the one most buyers want: newer, roomier and with a wing that behaves better than the early ones. A 360 with the larger MkII horizontal tail and a constant-speed prop asks more than a 235 with a fixed-pitch prop and the original small tail. The IV-P brings pressurization and the running costs to match; the unpressurized IV and the fixed-gear ES cost far less to keep. Engine, panel and whether the build is finished and out of phase one matter more than the year.

What buyers check

Start with who built it and how. These are amateur-built experimentals, so quality ranges from professional to alarming. Look for builder logs with photographs, a clean weight and balance and evidence the airframe was built to one version of the plans rather than a mix. Composite structure is checked for delamination, cracked fillets and heat damage (dark paint on an early fiberglass Lancair is a red flag). The retractable gear uses hydraulics that need to be understood by whoever inspects it, and gear-up landings are not rare. Ask about the horizontal tail on early 235 and 320 airframes, since a larger tail was introduced for good reason. An engine monitor and a real autopilot add value; an oddball engine or a homemade panel subtracts.

Who it suits

A Lancair is for the pilot who wants to go fast and far on modest fuel and is willing to fly it precisely every single time. It is not a first airplane, not a grass-strip airplane and not a fit for anyone who wants to relax on final. Buyers cross-shop a Glasair II or III, an RV-7 or RV-8 for something slower and more forgiving, or for the ES and IV, a used Columbia or Cirrus with a certified tag and a certified bill.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
