About the Just Aircraft Highlander
What it is
The Just Aircraft Highlander is a two-seat, side-by-side, tube-and-fabric high-wing kit airplane from Walhalla, South Carolina, in the Kitfox and Avid tradition: folding wings, flaperons, a Rotax up front and a cabin wide enough for two adults. The SuperSTOL of 2012 took the same airframe and added self-deploying leading-edge slats, bigger flaps and long-travel shock-absorbing main gear, and it is the airplane in all those videos landing in a few airplane lengths. The stretched SuperSTOL XL followed with a longer cabin and room for more engine.
They fly slow and land slower. A Highlander is a pleasant, light-handling bush airplane; a SuperSTOL is a specialist that comes down steep and nose-high and lets the gear soak up the arrival. Cruise is modest and big tires make it more so. Owners buy them for the last hundred feet of every flight and accept the rest.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers list Highlander, SuperSTOL and SuperSTOL XL, then the engine: Rotax 912 ULS, 912iS, 914 turbo or 915iS on most of them, with the XL sometimes carrying a bigger Lycoming-type or UL Power engine. The 915iS and a well-built XL ask the most. Nearly all are registered experimental amateur-built, so the builder-set gross weight varies from one airplane to the next and matters for useful load. Factory-assisted builds sell above a kit built alone in a garage because the workmanship is known.
What buyers check
Who built it and how well is the whole inspection. Look at welds, fabric tension and finish, control rigging and the folding-wing pins and their security. On a SuperSTOL, the slat tracks and rollers wear and jam with mud, and the trailing-link gear bushings and shocks take every hard arrival, so check them and the tailwheel for play. A nose-over or a gear collapse is a normal event in a bush airplane's life; the question is whether the repair was done and logged properly.
The Rotax 912 series has its own calendar: rubber hoses and carburetor parts on a five-year cycle, gearbox inspection by hours and, on the turbocharged versions, the turbo control unit history. A second owner needs an A&P for the yearly condition inspection, since the repairman certificate stays with the builder. Big tires, floats, a glass panel and extended baggage all add to the ask, and the empty weight creep from those additions subtracts from what it can carry.
Who it suits
The Highlander suits a pilot who wants a light, folding-wing backcountry airplane for two, and the SuperSTOL suits one who wants to land where nobody else can. Neither is a traveling airplane, and neither is a good buy for someone who is not comfortable owning an experimental. Realistic cross-shops are the Kitfox Series 7 and STi, the Rans S-7 and S-20, and the Zenith STOL line, with a Carbon Cub for the buyer with more money and a bigger mission.
