About the Zenith CH-601/650
What it is
The CH 601 Zodiac is a low-wing, all-metal, side-by-side two-seater designed in Canada in the mid 1980s and kitted in Missouri since the early 1990s, in several versions. It is built from flat aluminum sheet with pulled rivets and a bubble canopy, and it was drawn so a first-time builder could finish one in a garage with hand tools. Engines range from the Rotax 912 and Jabiru 3300 to the Continental O-200 and Corvair conversions, which is part of its appeal and part of its variability.
The CH 650 is the same airplane redrawn after the 601XL's structural troubles in the late 2000s, with a strengthened wing, a taller canopy, and the XL upgrade built in from the start. It flies like a Zodiac: docile, slow to land, with a wide cabin for its size and a modest cruise speed. Owners describe it as easy to fly and cheap to own, and they are frank that fit and finish depend entirely on who built it.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers write 601HD, 601HDS, 601UL, 601XL, CH 650 and 650B. The HD and HDS are the older versions, the HDS with a shorter speed wing; the UL is a lighter Rotax-powered version; the XL is the 2001 redesign to light-sport limits. The 650 and 650B are the current airplane. Among XLs, the dividing line is whether the factory upgrade kit has been installed and documented; an XL without it is hard to sell and harder to insure. Engine choice matters next: a Rotax 912 or Jabiru 3300 draws the widest audience, and an automotive conversion sells to a smaller pool that knows what it is looking at. A factory-built S-LSA example asks more because a school can rent it.
What buyers check
The XL upgrade is the first question and it is not optional. Ask for the paperwork showing the reinforcement kit was installed, by whom, and for photos of the spar doublers and the aileron counterbalances. On any Zodiac, look at the wing attach fittings and the center spar for cracks and smoking rivets, at the fuel tanks and lines for weeping, and at the gear legs and their attach for hard-landing damage. The control hinges and cable tension deserve a look, since flutter was part of the XL history. Engine care follows the engine: Rotax hoses and gearbox on schedule, Jabiru bulletins done, and on a conversion the cooling and the builder's own logs. Ask for the builder's log with photos and the Phase I sign-off. Damage history is usually a hard landing on the nosewheel; look at the fork, the firewall and the prop.
Who it suits
A Zodiac or a 650 fits a pilot who wants a roomy, forgiving, cheap-to-run two-seater for local flying and short trips, and who values a wide cabin over speed. It is not aerobatic, not fast, and not for anyone unwilling to research the specific build in front of them. Buyers cross-shop it against a Van's RV-12, a Sonex, and a Rans S-19, or a Cessna 150 on the certified side.

Geography and method
Where are the CH-601/650s, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
