Buyer's notes
About the Bellanca Viking
What it is
The Bellanca Viking is a four-seat, 300 hp retractable built the old way: a wood wing with spruce spars and plywood skin, a welded steel-tube fuselage, and fabric over the lot. The 17-30 arrived in 1967 with a Continental IO-520 and was followed by the 17-31 with a Lycoming IO-540, the turbocharged 17-31ATC, and the Super Viking from about 1970 on. Bellanca built them in Alexandria, Minnesota through the early 1980s, for a total somewhere over a thousand.
Pilots who have flown one talk about the controls first. The wood wing is stiff and smooth, the ailerons are light, and the airplane is genuinely fast for its power. It is also snug for four, and the useful load with full tanks is nothing to brag about.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers write 17-30, 17-30A, 17-31, 17-31A and 17-31ATC. The engine is the main split: Continental IO-520 in the 17-30 series, Lycoming IO-540 in the 17-31 series, both 300 hp. The 17-31ATC carries turbochargers. Later Super Vikings have a higher gross weight and a nicer interior than the first 17-30s, and a 1970s Super Viking with a good engine and a dry wing is the one buyers look for. Any Viking with a recent recover job and a documented wing inspection asks more than one without.
What buyers check
The wing. Wood does not corrode, but it rots, and glue joints of a certain age let go. A buyer wants the wing inspected through the access panels by someone who has done Bellanca wings before, looking at the spar, the ribs and the plywood around the attach fittings and the fuel tanks for water damage, soft spots and glue-line separation. An airplane that lived outside is suspect until proven otherwise; a hangared airplane with dry logs is a different animal. Fabric on the fuselage and tail is next, along with the steel tubing under it, especially the lower longerons, the tail post and the cluster around the gear.
The landing gear is hydraulic with an electric pump, and the nose gear and its hydraulic components are the things that wear. The engines are ordinary big Continentals or Lycomings and the parts are easy, but the cowling, exhaust and baffling are not. The fuel system has enough tanks and switches that you should read the placards before you fly it. An annual usually turns up fabric touch-ups, gear seals, a stiff nose strut and the odd rib.
Who it suits
The Viking suits a pilot who wants Bonanza-class speed and handling, has a hangar, and is willing to learn about wood and fabric rather than pretend it is aluminum. It is not for someone who parks outside, and it is not a load hauler. The cross-shop is the Bonanza 33 or 35, the Comanche 260, and the Mooney M20 series, all of which are easier to keep and none of which fly quite like it.

Geography and method
Where are the Vikings, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
