About the Piper PA-28 Cherokee
What it is
The PA-28 Cherokee is Piper's four-seat, low-wing, fixed-gear trainer and traveler, in production since 1961 with more than thirty thousand built. It replaced the fabric Tri-Pacer with an all-metal airframe, a constant-chord "Hershey bar" wing on the early airplanes, oleo struts, a stabilator and one door on the right side. The retractable Arrow shares the fuselage.
The Cherokee's reputation is that it does nothing surprising. It is stable, it lands easily, the oleo gear soaks up student landings and the stall is a mush rather than a break. It is slower than a Mooney on the same power, but it is easy to own and every mechanic in the country has worked on one. That is why flight schools still buy them.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers use the dash number. The early PA-28-150, -160 and -180 are the Hershey-bar airplanes, and the PA-28-180 with the 180 hp O-360 is the one buyers hunt. The PA-28-140 Cherokee 140, despite the name, has a 150 hp O-320 and was sold as a two-plus-two trainer; it is the cheapest way into the type. The 1974 Warrior (PA-28-151) introduced the longer tapered wing, and the Warrior II (PA-28-161) with 160 hp and the Archer II (PA-28-181) with 180 hp dominate listings from the late 1970s through the 1990s, followed by the Archer III and Warrior III from 1995 on. The PA-28-235 Cherokee 235 (later Pathfinder) and the PA-28-236 Dakota carry a 235 hp O-540 and haul full tanks and four adults and sell at a premium. The Arrow runs from the PA-28R-180 through the Arrow II, the tapered-wing Arrow III (PA-28R-201) and the T-tail Arrow IV. A tapered wing, 180 hp or more and a modern panel move the price more than the year does.
What buyers check
The main wing spar has a well-known inspection driven by fatigue cracks found in the spar bolt holes of high-time trainers. Whether it has been done, or whether the service history triggers it, is now the first question on any PA-28 pre-buy. Corrosion follows: the spar carry-through, the area under the rear seats and the tail cone are checked. The removable leading-edge fuel tanks are checked for leaks at the fittings and the sender. The oleo struts leak, and the nose gear shimmy dampener is a common annual item. The O-320 and O-360 are among the most trouble-free aircraft engines made. The Arrow's automatic gear extension system is often disabled under a common modification and buyers should know which state theirs is in. A modern autopilot and an engine monitor add value; a damaged wing with a vague logbook entry subtracts. A typical annual finds weeping strut seals, a leaking fuel sender, worn bushings and cracked plastic interior trim.
Who it suits
The Cherokee suits a new owner, a family with two small children and anyone who wants a four-seat airplane that is boring in the best way. It is not a fast traveler, it is not a short-field airplane with full tanks and the single door is a nuisance. Buyers cross-shop the Cessna 172 and 177 Cardinal, the Grumman Cheetah and Tiger (faster, sportier) and the Beech Sundowner.

Geography and method
Where are the PA-28 Cherokees, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
