Buyer's notes

About the Cessna 310

What it is

The Cessna 310 is the light twin Cessna built from 1954 to 1981, a bit over 5,000 of them including the military U-3. Low wing, two Continental sixes, retractable gear and the tip tanks that define its look, first the round "tuna tanks" and, from the early 1960s, the canted ones. The cabin seats five or six.

It is fast for what it burns and feels like a real airplane in the hands: heavy, well damped and quick. Single-engine performance on the early 240 hp airplanes is modest, so owners treat engine-out work seriously and stay current. The reputation among twin owners is that the 310 gives more speed per dollar than anything else in the class, paid for with a fuel system you have to understand and an exhaust system you have to inspect.

Variants that matter for price

Model letters run 310 through 310R, with turbocharged versions from the late 1960s listed as T310P, T310Q and T310R. The first airplanes used 240 hp O-470s; fuel injection and 260 hp arrived with the 310F, and the 310Q of the early 1970s is the volume airplane of the 260 hp era. The 310R (1975 to 1981) is the one buyers hunt: 285 hp IO-520s, the long nose with its baggage bay, and the highest gross weight of the line, with the T310R adding turbos and altitude. Everything before the 310Q sells on condition rather than on the letter. Deice boots, a known-good autopilot, an intercooler on a turbo airplane and a recent engine or two move the ask.

What buyers check

The exhaust system is the big one. The Continental-powered Cessna twins carry a recurring inspection for cracks in the exhaust and its heat exchangers because a failure there has burned through wing spars, so a 310 without a clean, current exhaust inspection is not a bargain. Wing spars, spar caps and the tip tank attach points get looked at for corrosion, and Cessna's supplemental inspection documents for the twins are the roadmap for a thorough pre-buy. Gear-up landings are common on the type, so the belly and props get checked along with the logs.

The electromechanical gear wants rigging at every annual; worn bellcranks show up as gear that hesitates or fails to lock. The fuel system, with mains in the tips, auxiliaries in the wings and optional wing-locker tanks, has rules about which tank takes off and lands and where returned fuel goes. Cylinders matter more than calendar time, and a T310 adds turbo hours. Vortex generators are a popular mod that lowers the minimum control speed.

Who it suits

The 310 suits a pilot who has a multi-engine rating, flies enough to stay proficient, and wants twin-engine speed and load without stepping up to a cabin-class airplane. It is not an economy purchase, and it is not a step up from a 172; two engines, two props and the inspections double the bills. Realistic cross-shops are the Beech Baron 55, the Piper Aztec, and the Twin Comanche or Seneca for less airplane at lower cost.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
