About the Maule M-4/M-7

What it is

Maules are four-seat, strut-braced high-wing utility airplanes built in Georgia by a family company since the early 1960s, and the M-4 through M-7 line covers the vast majority of them. The fuselage is welded steel tube under fabric, the wings are aluminum structure under fabric, the flaps are huge and the tail is tall. Every model since the first has been a bigger engine and a longer cabin bolted to the same short-field idea. The M-4 was the original, the M-5 Lunar Rocket added horsepower, the M-6 Super Rocket lengthened the wing and raised the gross weight, and the M-7 added cabin length and became the long-running standard. MX-7 and MXT-7 variants mix parts from different models; the T means tricycle gear.

Owners describe a Maule as a truck. It climbs hard, lands in nothing, hauls what fits through the door and cruises about as fast as a Skyhawk. The controls are heavy and the factory finish has always been workmanlike rather than pretty. What you get is a rugged airplane with a stall speed low enough that forty degrees of flap and a rough strip feel routine.

Variants that matter for price

The engine is the first thing sellers list. Early M-4s and M-5s came with Continental and Franklin engines, and the Franklin ones are cheap to buy for a reason: parts and overhaul support are thin. Anything with a Lycoming O-540 is the mainstream, listed as M-5-235, M-6-235 or M-7-235, and the fuel-injected 260 hp IO-540 in the M-7-260 Orion is the one float operators want. The MX-7-180 with a 180 hp O-360 is the economy tailwheel Maule and gives up climb and load for fuel burn. Tricycle-gear MXT-7s ask less than their tailwheel equivalents. Floats change the price entirely. A 1990s or newer M-7-235 or M-7-260 with a decent panel sits at the top.

What buyers check

Fabric and the steel under it. The fuselage tubing is inspected at the tail post, the lower longerons, the door frames and under the floor for rust, and chalky or heavily patched fabric gets priced as a recover job. Wing struts, their fittings and the flap tracks are checked for corrosion and wear. Floatplane history means a careful look at everything aluminum, especially after salt water. The O-540 is solid and the IO-540 needs its injection system understood. Big tires, vortex generators, a climb prop and extended baggage add value. An annual tends to find cracked exhaust, worn flap bushings and small fabric repairs.

Who it suits

A Maule suits a pilot who has a specific rough field, lake or ranch in mind and wants four seats and a big cargo door on a fabric-airplane budget. It is not a fast cross-country airplane, and the tailwheel versions want real tailwheel skills in a crosswind. Buyers cross-shop the Cessna 180 and 185 (all metal, more expensive, better supported), a Super Cub or Husky if two seats are enough, and the Cessna 170 or 172 for something gentler.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
