About the Aviat Husky
What it is
The Aviat Husky is a two-seat tandem, high-wing, tube-and-fabric taildragger built in Afton, Wyoming. It first flew in 1986 and was certified in 1987, one of very few new light airplane designs to reach production in the US during the slump of the late 1980s. The layout is Super Cub. The details are newer: a welded steel-tube fuselage, a 180 hp Lycoming O-360 with a constant-speed prop from the start, a roomier cabin and a big skylight.
It climbs hard, lands short and carries more than a stock Super Cub, with a more settled feel in the air and a little more cruise speed. Owners call it a Cub that grew up and got a job, and government agencies and glider clubs bought them for exactly that.
Variants that matter for price
Sellers list A-1, A-1A, A-1B, A-1C-180 and A-1C-200, and the letters mostly track gross weight: 1,800 lb on the A-1, 2,000 on the A-1B and 2,200 on the A-1C, which arrived in 2007 with a larger door and detail changes. The -200 swaps the carbureted O-360 for a 200 hp IO-360 and gets a bit more gross. Airplanes from the mid 2000s on have a revised wing with longer flaps. Buyers usually ask for an A-1C-200 first. Equipment counts nearly as much as the letter: floats, skis, big tires and a modern panel all add.
What buyers check
Huskies live on rough strips, so start with the gear legs, their attach points and the fuselage tubing around them, looking for cracked welds and bends, then check the tail post and lower longerons for rust. In the wing, the spar ends at the root fittings and the strut attach points get checked for cracks, along with drag-wire tension. Some early airplanes had weak corrosion protection inside the wing, so an older Husky on original fabric deserves a borescope. Ground loops and float mishaps happen; what matters is a clean, documented repair.
The O-360 and IO-360 are ordinary Lycomings. Float airplanes need a hard look for corrosion. An annual tends to find worn tailwheel parts, cracked exhaust and fabric chafing. Keep matching paperwork for every float, ski and tire installation, because the next buyer will ask.
Who it suits
The Husky suits a pilot who wants Super Cub capability in a newer airplane with a better cabin, and who has tailwheel skills or will get them. Two people and camping gear to a gravel bar is the mission. It is not a fast cross-country airplane, and on floats the payload shrinks quickly. Buyers cross-shop the PA-18 Super Cub, the CubCrafters Top Cub and Carbon Cub, and a Maule for four seats.

Geography and method
Where are the Huskys, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
