About the Extra 300/330
What it is
The Extra 300 is the German-built unlimited-class aerobatic airplane that replaced the Pitts as the standard airshow and competition mount from the early 1990s on. It is a steel-tube fuselage with composite panels and fabric aft, a carbon-fiber wing, and a 300 hp Lycoming AEIO-540 with inverted oil and fuel systems. Two seats in tandem, pilot in the back, and certified in the aerobatic category with limits of about plus and minus ten g flown solo. The Extra 330 is the same airplane with a more powerful AEIO-580.
It flies like a competition airplane, because it is one. Roll rate is very high, control forces are light and there is no stability to speak of. Landing is fast for a taildragger, with a nose that hides the runway on rollout. As a cross-country machine it is loud and has no baggage to speak of, and owners accept that because nothing else certified does what it does with a seat for a passenger.
Variants that matter for price
The mid-wing original 300 and single-seat 300S came first. The 300L of 1995, with the wing moved to the bottom of the fuselage and the same two seats, is the common one, and the 300LP is a lightened version. The 330 line, with the AEIO-580, runs from the single-seat 330SC competition airplane through the two-seat 330LX and 330LT, and the newer NG with its carbon fuselage. Sellers write 300L, 300LP, 330LX and so on, and the two-seaters with the bigger engine ask the most. A smoke system and a modern panel are worth having.
What buyers check
How the airplane was used matters more than how many hours it has. A competition or airshow airplane has lived at the g limits; an owner's weekend aerobatic airplane has not. Ask for the g-meter history and any overstress inspection. The manufacturer publishes life limits and recurring inspections on the composite wing and spar, and an airplane close to a limit is worth much less than the hours suggest. The engine mount and fuselage frame get looked at for cracks, the gear legs for cracking at the attach, and the big single-piece canopy for crazing.
The AEIO-540 and AEIO-580 are aerobatic Lycomings that get run hard, so ask about oil consumption, cylinders and the inverted systems. MT prop blades erode and the hubs have their own inspections. Many Extras came from Europe, and a clean import history is a plus. Have a shop that specializes in aerobatic airplanes do the pre-buy.
Who it suits
The Extra suits the pilot who flies aerobatics seriously, competes or instructs, and wants a second seat for a student or a passenger. It is a poor choice for someone who wants a sporty airplane for trips and an occasional roll. Realistic cross-shops are the Pitts S-2B or S-2C, the Sukhoi Su-29, and the GameBird GB1 for buyers looking at the newest airplanes.

Geography and method
Where are the 300/330s, and how are they counted?
Where they are
How we count
Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
