About the Stinson 108

What it is

The Stinson 108 is a four-seat, high-wing taildragger built in the first few years after the war, with a welded steel-tube fuselage, metal wing spars and fabric over all of it. Around five thousand were built before the line ended in 1950, which makes it one of the more common postwar four-seaters still flying. It was sold as the Voyager and, with a hardwood cargo floor and wood trim, as the Station Wagon. Power came from a Franklin six of 150 or 165 horsepower.

It is a heavy, solid airplane for its class and it flies that way. The wing has fixed leading-edge slots and big slotted flaps, so it stalls gently and lands slow for its size. Owners like the handling, which is stable and honest, and they like the fact that the airplane will actually carry four people and their bags. It is not fast. Its reputation is as the taildragger you buy when you want a Cessna 170's mission with more room and more character.

Variants that matter for price

Sellers write 108, 108-1, 108-2 and 108-3. The plain 108 and the 108-1 have the 150 hp Franklin; the 108-2 brought the 165 hp engine, and the 108-3 added a taller vertical fin, more fuel and a higher gross weight. The 108-3 is the one most buyers hunt for, though some prefer the earlier tail and lighter feel. Engine conversions matter a great deal here. The Franklin is supported but parts are not a phone call away, so airplanes converted to a Lycoming O-360 or a Continental under STC usually ask more and sell faster. A recent recover in a modern fabric is worth a lot.

What buyers check

Fabric condition comes first, with punch tests and a look inside every inspection ring. Then the steel: the lower longerons, the tailpost, the area under the floor and around the gear attach fittings, where moisture collects and rust starts. The metal wing spars deserve a close look at the strut fittings and along the trailing edge for corrosion, and the lift struts should be checked for internal rust like any sealed strut of this era. The Franklin engine needs an owner who knows Franklins; ask about the crankshaft, the cylinders and where the parts have been coming from. Damage history usually means a ground loop, so look at the wingtips and gear legs. Disc brakes, shoulder harnesses and a decent radio help. A Franklin airplane that has been sitting is the one to walk away from.

Who it suits

The 108 suits a pilot who wants a roomy, forgiving taildragger for grass strips and weekend trips with real passengers. It is slow, it is not an IFR airplane in most panels, and the engine supply asks for patience unless it has been converted. Buyers cross-shop it against a Cessna 170, a Piper Pacer or Tri-Pacer, and the Aeronca Sedan.

How we count

Methodology

Barnstormers piston categories are read once a day. A listing is "delisted" after it is missing on two consecutive mornings. Days listed starts the morning we first saw the ad, so listings that predate Jul 19, 2026 are excluded from time-on-market figures. Prices are asking prices as typed by the seller. Nothing here is an appraisal. Full methodology.
